This job falls under the “get your foot in the door” category of overseas security contractor jobs, like Force Protection. It will suck, management will probably suck, housing will suck, the local weather will suck, the job will suck, etc.

However, unlike Force Protection jobs, these are unarmed positions, and you wear street clothing. That may make some of you nervous, but you are just adult babysitting vetted non-US personnel deep in a highly guarded base.

You will be in the safest place in whatever country you will be in, and in the end, what are you going to do with a glizzy while escorting anyway?

IT’S A GREAT WAY TO GET SPONSORED FOR A SECURITY CLEARANCE

This is the main fringe benefit of getting hired as an OCN/LN Escort: the opportunity get overseas security-adjacent experience and a security clearance at the same time.

Currently, every job listing I see will sponsor you for your security clearance.

And just about every company out there is looking for people because this is a high-turnover, low-paying, and generally boring and miserable job, as you will read about later in this article.

WHAT DOES AN OCN/LN ESCORT DO?

SHORT ANSWER:

You will essentially be a babysitter for adults.

LONG ANSWER:

On military bases overseas, anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or does not have certain privileges on their base ID card must be escorted at all times.

And that’s where the OCN/LN (Other Country National/Local National) Monitor, or simply “Escort,” comes in. This person escorts the local hire people on a U.S. military base in areas you would normally need a clearance for.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

The military contracts out grunt work like construction, electricians, janitors, translators, and so on. Most of the people they hire will be folks from countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, and neighboring non-oil-rich Arab countries.

And obviously, you can’t let uncleared people just wander around unaccompanied, so that’s where you will come in. The OCN/LN Escort keeps an eye on them and makes sure no one wanders off or is doing anything nefarious/shady/stupid.

HOS IS WORKING AS A CLEARED ESCORT?

AN AVERAGE DAY OF A CLEARED ESCORT

IN THE MORNING:

• Meet the LN/OCN’s at the front gate badge office

• Get them base access badges

• Stick with them until the end of the day

END OF DAY:

• Bring them back to the badge office

• Make sure they turn in their base badge

• Send them on their way

I have done this work before, and it is the most frustrating and infuriating work a man could possibly do. Unless you have the patience of a saint, this job will drive you to drink or just insanity.

PREPARE TO BE CONSTANTLY FRUSTRATED

Let’s just say trying to get a group of people to do the same thing all the time, who by default, look at you as an adversary is a near-impossible job.

THE HOURS SUCK

You will work long hours, probably 12-hour days, six days a week, for about 40K a year or less.

THE PAY WILL SUCK

The hourly wage for this job has not changed since 2002. I am not even joking. If you do the math, you are making about 11 bucks an hour.

THE HOUSING WILL… I BET YOU CAN GUESS THIS ONE

The housing situation will vary, but most of the time you will either live in a not-so-bad Conex home on base or a dump somewhere in town. Either way, you will have zero privacy, you will hate your roommates, and it will generally suck.
